The Need for Quality Suspension

Suspension is a system of connecting the vehicles upper body to its wheels and allows for fluid and relative motion for a smooth ride. This is collectively called as the suspension system. Tires, Springs, Shock absorbers and linkages combine together to carry the whole weight of a car or truck. Each model of vehicle has different suspension to carry its weight all the while keeping the vehicle smooth the entire ride. Even the design of front suspension and rear end suspension of a car can have a different structure. These suspension components are designed in such a manner to support both road-handling and quality which are from each other.

Purpose of Suspension

Suspension serves multiple purposes while maintaining the whole balance of the car. While the main aim of the suspension is to protect the vehicle and its inside cargo from any damage, the overall stability of handling, braking, wheel alignment and improves the age of tires as well as internal components too.

Chassis that holds the cable of the car is attached to the wheel axis and Springs absorbs the weight of the vehicle, simultaneously reducing the excess energy from road shocks. So as the bumps come in your way these suspension parts take all the pressure on themselves, giving a smooth ride to passengers and minimizing the effect of poor road conditions. Suspension brings the stability in controlling the vehicle through wheels by pushing the tire to be in contact with the ground every time resulting in better handling respectively.

Weight transfer is another technical feature of these suspension systems. When the vehicle makes a turn, accelerate or apply brakes the whole weight of the car changes as per the situation. Distance between wheel centres, the height of the centre of gravity, the amount of acceleration experienced, and the mass of the car or truck are the major factors that define the value of weight transfer.

Suspensions are different based on the need and requirements of the vehicle. Common passenger cars use strut with single shock absorber, a heavy loaded truck uses leaf springs and pushrod suspension for high speed in case of formulas one cars where comfort is secondary.

Smooth movement of the vehicle along the road prevents the pre-maturing of tires too. Worn suspension can reduce the whole stability of the vehicle resulting in less overall performance. These suspension needs to be replaced with authentic suspension parts to transform the vehicle capabilities to its optimum level.

Some of our customers request information on air bagging there classic cars, trucks or just about anything with a straight axle by mono leafing there leaf springs. This is the process of removing all but the main leaf spring to create a drop in which air bags can lift you back up to an alternate height.. This mono leafing your front or rear suspension, will provide you with the drop that is needed to air ride your application. Unfortunately this is not a good long term alternative to a drop or 4-link kit, as the single rear leaf spring will become weak and break within a year or two assuming this is a daily driver. If this is a show car then aside from the mono leaf approach looking and performing hokey, it may take a couple more years for the ultimate demise of the main leaf spring. To get an idea of what running mono leafs in any vehicle does, take a look at the images below.

The goal here with air ride is to get the suspension down, down, down if you are looking for a slammed look, and then lift the vehicle to your ride height or above with the newly added air spring and bracket kit. Traditionally this is done with a 4-link kit which allows you to completely delete your leaf springs.

The other more cost effective and easier to install option is keeping your leaf springs completely intact and going with a static drop kit, which in most cases is an axle flip kit or a drop block kit. The above links will provide you a glimpse at the hardware that is needed to make this drop possible. Now in no way is this the correct way to do an air ride instillation but is certainly a better approach then running a mono leaf.

Once your vehicle is at a lowered stance you can then proceed to add the air spring to recover the height you are looking for. This is a much more cost effective way to lower and air ride your rear axle without having to jeopardize the integrity of your leaf spring. If a mono leaf is being used, be sure to stay diligent on inspecting this part regularly. You do not want a leaf spring breaking during normal driving speed as it can be catastrophic.

I hope this helps, clarify some of the questions you may have had with regards to being cost effective and safe with your air ride installation involving a straight axle.

Many drivers on the road have contemplated customizing the suspension on their cars and trucks. The overall look and feel of a car, truck, or SUV can be enhanced by adding a lowering kit or adjustable air suspension system to it. However, the operator should remember that only a modest drop will give the vehicle a more stylish look. When considering a lowering option for a car or truck the factory chassis components will need to be checked. Much of the lowering stance limitation comes front the fact that the factory suspension will simply not allow it to drop any further. A good test is to remove any bump stops, and remove any current factory suspension components suspending the vehicle. With this suspension equipment removed a good visual example of the depth of the drop can been seen. A truck can be lowered by using a set of simple accessories or slammed on the ground with additional hardware which we call street scraper kits. There are many companies like X2 Industries, who make it easy for drivers to lower and even slam their vehicles. In addition to providing custom chassis accessories needed to lower specific years, makes, and model of cars and trucks, our store also allows customers the advantage of dealing with experienced suspension professionals. It offers a variety of airbag kits, street scraper air ride kits and lowering kits including but not limited to air shocks, c-notch kits, 4-links, brackets, and custom air struts for the front and rear. While lowering a car, truck or SUV, it is required that the length of shocks be changed to accommodate the latest drop done to the vehicle. You can use the slammed chassis components and air ride products provided by X2 Industries for a more efficient and convenient way to slam your ride.

Some of the features to lowering your vehicles include helping users with easier access to entering and exiting there car or truck. This is refereed to as an air accessibility system. It’s main objective is only the accessibility of the vehicle and depending on the driver the drop and lift height may be changed to accommodate this feature. These custom air lowering kits also make it easier for drivers to control wheel movement and overall ride comfort. This specific feature can be utilized on very poor roads. The system can then be adjusted to give a softer or more firm ride depending on the conditions. If your adjustments are adequate you will notice that the system can soften the ride while still suspending the vehicle from the ground. The custom aftermarket enthusiasts manly use the adjustable and static lowering suspension for the looks. Slamming anything on the ground, no matter what the reason is a difficult task and can become very involved. Using the right hardware and choosing quality long lasting parts like our street scraper kits, compressors, and valves makes all the difference. When considering slammed Honda, Jaguar, Toyota, Chevrolet, Dodge, or Ford air suspension be sure to ask plenty of questions and have a solid understanding of what will be required for the specific application you are working with. Also, X2 Industries is always here to help with any questions.

In many cases truck air ride suspension kits will require fabrication to complete the installation.

The custom air suspension industry has made leaps and bound over the last 20 years, and many manufacturers / suppliers are capable of providing suspension for just about every vehicle, no matter what your style.

Prior to now air suspension was built for a limited market, mainly MINI Trucks or lowriders. Unfortunately there were many cusomers moving over to the new suspension which had to make sacrifices to accommodate what was available on the market back then. Today’s custom air suspension market is much larger and can accommodate just about any stance you are looking for.

Not only are the air ride systems becoming available for alternate heights but the shops that install this new air bag suspension have the knowledge and ability to modify parts of the vehicles chassis to change the ride height to exactly what your looking for.

Lifted air bag suspension kits, custom car and truck lift suspension, huge air ride lift

Custom engineered control arms, spindles, 4-links, extended trailing arms, custom track bars, links, custom brackets, and taller air bags all make adding a lifted air ride kit possible. It’s not to say that you or your installer won’t run into complications due to the sheer height of the new chassis, but it is certainly a much easier process than it was before.

If you are looking for an air bag lift kit to clear some large wheels (donk style) or are simply looking to gain some off road clearance then x2 can take care of it.

Lowriders are a much diffrent beast all together. Much of the lowered air ride kit equipment used to only go so far depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle. Leaps and bounds have also been made with these dropped air ride systems as well. With lowered control arms, spindles, frame notches, and custom frame modifications durring the installation almost all vehicles can now lay out completely. A good match in wheel and tire diameter should also be considered when trying to maximize the total drop you are looking for. With very large wheels and certain cars and trucks, a completely new custom crossmember may be required to gain the lowered stance you are looking for.

No matter what the application, or heights you are looking for, rest assured with the right combination of air suspension hardware and a good installer with fabrication experience it is now possible to modify your current suspension to do just about anything you would like.

NOTE: Body drops are also a good option when trying to maximize your dropped air ride stance. Keep in mind, that these types of drops just about always require some major body and frame modifications to allow the body to sit lower on the frame and would require the work of a fabrication shop that is firmiliar with this type of lowering modification.
